Thanks
to the
generosity
of Valley
businesses,
Greater
Valley EMS
has just
received a
new Champion
Beast
Hydraulic
Spreader to
replace a
36-year old,
heavier and
slower one.
Commonly
referred to
as another’s
proprietary
name, the
“Jaws of
Life”, this
piece of
vital rescue
equipment is
used to
literally
spread apart
thick steel
in
automobile
or
industrial
extrication.
Ray
Stackhouse,
Volunteer
Assistant
Chief of the
EMS
Division,
has been
anticipating
the tool’s
arrival for
quite some
time. “It
really is an
important
upgrade that
will allow
us to reach
the patient
faster”
explains
Stackhouse,
“and by
making it
only forty
pounds, it’s
easier for
one man to
use the tool
for a longer
period of
time with
less
discomfort.”
According to
FireEngineering.com,
the Champion
Beast and
its
accessories
are designed
to tackle
many of the
unique
requirements
presented by
today's
5-star crash
rated
vehicles.
Modern day,
complex car
construction
includes
laminated
metals,
design
deflection
materials
and
reinforced
posts
including
boron and
other exotic
metal
inserts.
“We really
do
appreciate
the
generosity
of this
community
and feel
that if one
life is
saved
because of
it, the
return on
the
investment
is
immeasurable”
adds
Stackhouse.
